Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin!

exercise
One of the most controversial chapters in Dr. Lipman's new book "The 100 Calorie Secret" is all about the question whether or not you should exercise while trying to lose weight."Although it may be healthy and good for everybody, imposing the need to exercise while being on a diet to lose weight creates confusing goals for most people. Overwhelming yourself with time-consuming exercise plans, and at the same time restricting your calorie intake, will lead to failure of both losing weight and regularly working out in nine out of ten cases." Dr. Lipman no longer stands alone with his opinion. Check out John Cloud's latest, must-read article "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin" in Times Magazine.

Eating Food Increases Metabolism-But Does It Cause Weight Loss PDF Print E-mail

Every time you eat you burn calories no different than when you ride a bike or climb a flight of stairs. How can eating burn calories? How? It's part of the metabolism, the breaking down of food to obtain the energy/calories. It takes calories to break the food down into small particles, to open up the energy inside the food and to fully digest, absorb and utilize them. This process is called thermogenesis. It accounts for about 10% of the total daily energy expenditure.

Negative Calorie Foods: Can You Really Increase Your Metabolism By Eating More?

The "thermal" effects of food, i.e. that eating foods can increase calories burned has been a popular Internet subject recently. Consequently there is a lot of misinformation. The theory is that you can lose weight by eating lots of these negative calorie foods. Proponents claim, for example, that you will burn 80 calories digesting a 25-calorie piece of broccoli, for a net loss of 55 calories.

Celery is another commonly cited example of a negative calorie food because it's made mainly of water and cellulose, an indigestible vegetable fiber. Other foods sometimes labeled as negative calorie include asparagus, berries, broccoli, cauliflower, grapefruit and cabbage. These foods that contain few calories do require a large amount of energy to digest compared with the amount of calories they provide, however, this does not mean that it is significant enough to result in weight loss.

Here is a list of foods, where the energy to digest them, might exceed the total calories:
• Cayenne Pepper
• Salsa
• Hot Peppers
• Hot Peppers
• Ice Water
• Green Tea
• Apple Cider Vinegar Drink
• Cabbage
• Celery
• Brusel Sprouts
• Broccoli and Cauliflower
• Lemon or Vinegar
• Vinaigrette Dressing
• Grapefruit
• Berries
• Fatty Fish
• Soup

Many of the foods presented as "negative calorie foods" are vegetables, fruits and nearly zero calorie drinks such as lemon water, ice tea green tea. All of these can help in any weight loss plan. But they are not a magic bullet for weight loss.

Exercise & Weight Loss: Is it Necessary? PDF Print E-mail

Do You Have to Exercise and Work Out to Lose Weight?  The answer is YES & NO:

NO you don't have to work out and
exercise like fanatic or athlete, YES you need to move around.

More often than not, you will hear that weight loss plans that do not include exercise are not serious. This is accentuated by the fact that some of the weight loss scams deliberately advertise that you can lose weight without exercising. The difficulty with most traditional weight loss programs is that they often have confusing goals. They want you to change all of your foods and at the same time ask for your regular physical exercise, sometimes as much as 2 or 3 hours a week in a gym.

Are Your Prescription Medications Stopping Your Weight Loss? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard

Struggling to lose weight and not getting anywhere? Maybe gaining weight on medications? Are your prescription medications slowing your weight loss?

Prescription drugs are common source of weight problems or at least difficulty losing weight. The fall into two large categories:

1. Anti-depressants, Mood Stabilizers, Anti-Psychotic Drugs: These Drugs Lead the Way in Weight Difficulties: Overall-25% chance of gaining weight

The earliest antidepressants drugs including Elavil, Tofranil, and Zyprexa (an anti-psychotic drug) are a source of significant weight changes. Other old drugs including Parnate, Nadil and Remeron, also have significant weight problems.. Newer antidepressants have less potential for weight groblems.. The new anti-depressants Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac and Effexor are the newer drugs with a weight gain potential, but not as great a the older drugs. Wellbutin is an anti-depressant that is not in the SSRI group and does not cause weight gain. In fact weight loss has been reported. Newer drugs like Celexia and Lexapro cause the least weight gain in this group. Some researchers feel the weight changes my be due to improvement in the depression.

2.Steroids, Estrogens, Diabetic and Blood Pressure Drugs

Numerous other drugs have been associated with unusual weight changes. The estimate is there are more than 50 drugs known to cause weight gain. These drugs are well known causes of weight problems and include: Steroids: both legal and illegal, this includes prednisone, testosterone, and estrogens.

Corticosteroid Drugs Include:

Betamethasone (Celestone)
Cortisone (Cortone) Dexamethasone (Decadron)
Hydrocortisone (Cortef)
Methylprednisolone (Medrol)
Prednisolone (Prelone)
Prednisone (Deltasone)
Budesonide (Entocort EC
Anabolic Steriods (most are illegal)
Testosterone
Diababol
Methyl-testosterone
Fluroxytestosterone.
Diabetic Drugs Causing Weight Problems.
Insulin may cause hypoglycemia (low-blood sugar), which stimulates appetite.

Sulfonylureas -- such as Diabinese (chlorpropamide), Amaryl (glimepiride), Glucotrol (glipizide), and DiaBeta or Glynase (glyburides) -- The thiazolidinediones -- Actos (pioglitazone) and Avandia (rosiglitazone)- produce fluid retention and the increase accumulation of fat inside of fat cells.

High Blood Pressure Drugs Cause Weight Problems:
Some beta blockers, especially the older ones, such as atenolol (Tenormin) and metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL) can cause an average weight gain of about 5 lbs. Newer beta blockers, such as carvedilol have less weight gain potential

Avapro, a newer anti-hypertensive agent has been report to produce both weight problems: gain and weight loss.
Other, non beta blocker, high blood pressure drugs that may cause weight gain or difficulty losing weigh include:
Cardura® (doxazosin),Hytrin® (terazosin),Minipress® (prazosin), Altace®(ramipril),
Lotensin® (benazepril), Vasotec® (enalapril), Prinivil®(lisinopril). Zestril®
Atacand® (candesartan). Cozaar® (losartan)
Migraine Medications Cause Weight Gain

Other Drugs Causing Weight Gain

Valproic acid (VPA), Gabapentin
Reported Weight problems in a few other drugs:
Antihistamines such as Nytol® Benadryl® (diphenydramine)
Antibiotics such as Bactrim or Levoquin Anti seizure medication: depakote

What to do if you suspect your medications may play a role in weight gain or even just difficult weight loss?

First, never stop them cold turkey. That may be even worse. Keeping in mind that everyone responds to these drugs differently, switching from one to another one can often can lessen the weight problems. You need to see your personal physician who prescribed the drugs to make the correct changes.

Other means to prevent weight gain may simply be adding the same modalities people without medical problems use to treat their obesity. This includes limiting high calorie foods, especially carbs, as well as exercising. Exercise, especially has great benefits for depression.

Weight Loss in 2010: NEAT The New Secret PDF Print E-mail

NEATMAY1

Is Exercise Needed For Weight Loss?  Will it actually help you lose pounds? Can sedentary individuals actually add significant muscle mass?  Can you change your diet and accomplish time consuming exercise at the same time? These are some significant and controversial issues.

A previous article reviewed the benefits of exercise, the problems with trying  to make an Olympic athlete out of a couch potato, and what is really realistic. Here is more about a new concept- NEAT which may help sort out some of these issues and change the dieter struggling
to lose weight and becoming discouraged by inability to exercise.

  • You don't have to exercise like an athlete to lose weight-

  • Just add some NEAT a day

  • Overweight and thin people have different NEAT's

  • How you can change to NEAT and not even notice it.

Dr. James A Levine from the Mayo Clinic  recently coined a new term from his measurements of daily activity:  NEAT ( for non-exercise activity thermogenesis) to describe the calorie burning that is associated with daily activities including walking, cleaning, cooking, driving a car and even sex. (Thermogenesis is the scientific word for calorie burning). Increasing you NEAT activities just a few minutes a day can help you lose weight and improve all of your metabolic parameters like blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol. It will truly prolong your life.

in the figure above, the  black column represents how all of the days calories are used: part of the  calories for NEAT, & those calories for basal metabolism (digestion, heart beat, body heat).  Not included are any calories burned up by exercise or burned on a job.
