"Over the long run a sustained modest reduction in carbohydrate intake may help to reduce energy consumption and facilitate weight loss," reports Dr Paula Chandler-Laney at the June 2009 Endocrine Society Meeting.
While ultra low carb diets like Atkins and moderate low carb diets like South Beach are not doubt effective, they are almost impossible to maintain. People just need the carbs, especially women. The normal American diet and the control group in this study, contains 55 percent of daily calories consumed come from carbs-: sugars, starches and fiber.
This was compared to a "moderate" carb diet of 43% carbs. The researchers matched the protein intake of both diets studied (18 percent of calories) because protein influences fullness.
The study found the weight loss and feelings of fullness were similar between the two groups. The important issue was the obtaining all of the benefits of the low carb diet without all of the restrictions of the older diet plans. The concept that you don't have to go so crazy with the carb restriction and then up only to fail is an important one. The individuals who make the least number of changes from their normal eating are the ones most likely to succeed. |
