Does Eating Out in in Casual Restaurants Really Make Us Fat? What's the Difference Between Eating at Home and Eating Out? Last year 25 million Americans ate at casual or fast food restaurants every day. and it's estimated that 1/2 of the food budget is spent outside of the home. With 60% of the mothers out of the house all day and faced with work, soccer games, dance lesions and homework convenience is beginning to trump cost and unfortunately health. But does it need to be? Let's face it, the appeal of convenience, price, ease and pleasure people get from fast food restaurants will not stop, in fact in the face of a deteriorating economy the appeal of these restaurants increases. Here are the pros and cons: Eating In: healthy, probably cheaper, personal, can be tuned to special needs, family eats together. Eating Out: convenient, less planning, less personal effort, possibly easier portion control, more options, no left over problems, no problem with "cook more-eat more," for women less preparation and exposure to food. When money is tight, people tend to shift to cheaper foods the carbs - rice, pasta and potatoes and way from fish, fresh vegetables and fruits. The carbs are cheap and have no easy portion control. Americans eating more of these The bottom line is that fast food eating has become a way of life and answers many of the food issues for families. For many reasons, it's just too appealing. What to do? Make better choices when going out. All of the restaurants have salads. A grilled chicken sandwich and a salad is not such a bad choice. Certainly the portion is controlled and there are no leftovers.
