Weight loss is associated with sexual improvement in 90% of overweight individuals says recent study. The "magic" number is again about 10-15 lbs, 2 inches from your waist. Reducing your calorie intact by only 100 calories a day for a year will do it. Obviously the time can be reducing by uping the calorie reduction and adding some exercise.  Why is sexual activity so related to body weight?
Weight gain and loss of sex drive: The hormone connection in both men and women.

More and more studies are finding a direct link between increasing weight gain and sex problems such as decrease sex drive, erectile dysfunction and  prostate problems in men and loss of libido in women. One of the primary hormones involving sex function in both men and women is  testosterone. Low testosterone levels lead to loss of libido and poor performance.  viagravssclaelHormones have been found to be dysfunctional in obesity, especially those related to sex-testosterone and estrogen.

In 2000, researchers found that in 2100 men 45 ys or more, obese men more than 2.4 times as likely to have low blood testosterone compared to normal men. In 2006 low testosterone was found to be related to weight gain, loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.

Low testosterone may be the key:
Low testosterone has been linked to several health problems including loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, fatigue, mood changes and weaker bones.  This hormonal change may be related to the enlarging fat cells around the belly interfering with testosterone rather than due to an associated condition like hypertension and diabetes.

Polycystic ovaries, obesity, and infertility.
A parallel in women is the endocrine dysfunction leading to polycystic ovaries and infertility. In this case, again it is not an associated condition. The engorged fat cells actually make new hormones and chemicals interfering with ovarian function causing polycystic ovaries and increase body hair.

What to do?  Testosterone shots or 10 lb. weight loss?

Obvious weight loss is better than taking shots of testosterone. Long term testosterone may have significant effects on prostate function and other cancers. A study in Obesity research in middle age obese men found significant increases in testosterone with weight loss.
