Light Exercise Even as Little As Walking only 1-2 Miles Per Hour May Have Many Benefits.
March 25, 2009: Clinical Cardiology
Dr. Thomas Vanhecke and colleagues from the Department of Medicine, William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan released a report on activity levels in morbid obese people. Published in the March issue of Clincal Cardiology, they showed people with morbid obesity (BMI 40 to 49), which corresponds to a weight of 250 pounds or more (depending on height) spent on the average of 23 hours and 51.6 minutes sitting, or sleeping. They took 3700 steps per day. This is far less than the 10,000 steps per day which is regarded as healthy. Two individuals spend the entire 24 hour day sedentary while the most active individual in this group of 10 was one individual who walked for 8 minutes.
The authors conclude that even light walking at 1-2 miles per hour may show significant health benefits.
