Satiety, the felling of fullness has been related to eating high protein or high fat foods, fiber and foods with high water concentrations like some vegetables and fruits like cantaloupe. Drs Kirchner at al from the University of California are finding evidence that the opposite is true. Fatty foods do not increase fullness, they actually produce more hunger. Grehlin is the only hormone in our bodies that tell us to eat. It is triggered by hunger. Obese people that have had gastric bypass lose weight because the stomach disruption interferes with grehlin release and they have much less appetite. They reported in the June 2009 issue of Nature Medicine that fatty foods may be responsible for grehlin activitation and thus hunger. |
