You Cannot Pick the Parts of the Mediterranean Diet You Like and Ignore the Others! The issue for many is weight loss--that's being healthy.Drink a glass of red wine every night, eat the olive oil loaded salads and whole grain pasta and you will gain weight. What about the rest of the Mediterranean Diet?
The Mediterranean region has gathered an immense appeal among Americans. Fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, beans, nuts and last but not least the ultimate Mediterranean food; The almighty extra virgin olive oil. Mediterranean way of eating: Olive oil has become the 21st century’s “health tonic,” the cure for everything from heart disease, stroke, cancer, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, aging and, with its high Vitamin E content, the “over the counter” Viagra. However, olive oil is only one component of the Mediterranean lifestyle. We quickly forget to include more fresh vegetables and fruits and to eat much smaller portions of food. A real Mediterranean diet is not what Americans Like to Eat: After all, Italians do not fill up their SUVs at Costco®, Sam’s Club® or B.J.’s®, nor do they eat at Pizza Hut, McDonald’s®, or at the Cheesecake Factory®. Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, of Tufts University and a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association says:
"If the main message that Americans get is to just increase their olive or canola oil consumption, that's unfortunate because they will increase their caloric intake and they are already getting too many calories. What they need to do is eat more fruits, vegetables, and legumes and fewer foods rich in saturated fats."
