Most  low calorie foods and drinks are made with artificial sweeteners.  In part 3 of  this series, you will see the current evidence that artificial sweetners are not only safe but
can assist anyone trying to limit their calories and lose weight.

  1. Artificial Sweeteners have been stuides more than any other substance for 15 years.
  2. Artificial Sweeteners do not increase hunger
  3. Artificial Sweeteners do not cause cellulite, cravings, or kidney stones.

Of course water would be better than sodas or juices, artificial or regular!
That's NOT the issue, if people liked to drink water we would have far less obesity today.  After all drinking  a single glass of fruit juice or a can of soda a day for a year results in a a 12 lb. weight gain. The issue is  between artificially sweetened beverages and sugar filled regular sodas and similar beverages.

NIH Study of Artificial Sweeteners:
In April 2006, the National Institutes of Health reported on the effects of artificial sweeteners in 500,000 men and women followed over a five-year period: The Answer is In:  Artificial Sweeteners Are Safe !

NO link between diseases and artificial sweeteners:
The massive NIH study  found NO PROBLEMS.  Recent reviews of 516 European and 255 American studies, each representing a study of thousands of individuals consuming artificial sweeteners,  confirms their safety. Contrary to the often quoted findings from twelve female rats in 1974 given massive amounts of artificial sweeteners, there has been NO link between artificial sweeteners and birth defects, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney stones, epilepsy, emotional disorders or even  cellulite.

Advantages of artificial sweeteners:
Drinks with artificial sweeteners,  especially sucralose -Splenda®:

  • Do NOT increase appetite
  • Often satisfy sweet cravings
  • Help the dieter avoid reaching for the cookies and candies
  • Produce bloating and feelings of fullness
  • Produce weight loss, the goal of all diet plans!

Any minimal side effects, are far outweighed by the proven benefits of weight loss. The recent addition of Truvia® brand of Rebiana which is made from the leaves of the stevia plant may satisfy the anxiety of those who are over concerned with using Aspartame and sucralose.

Artificial Sweeteners:  SAFE   EFFECTIVE   DESIARABLE
Everyone trying to lose weight who have sweet cravings needs to examine the evidence themselves if they are in doubt. Check out the NIH review for a summary of  hundreds of studies in the U.S. and around the world.

The evidence is clear: water is of course the best choice, but given the choice between diet sodas and regular soda, sodas sweetened with artificial sweeteners are an acceptable choice.

I see hundreds of overweight patients every year that gain enormous weight by believing what I call “grandma” stories and Internet gossip. The overwhelming scientific evidence is that these products are not only safe , but may provide substantial benefits in ANY weight loss program. DO NOT BELIEVE INTERNET RUMORS, CHECK THE BEST SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE  YOURSELF & THEN MAKE AN INFORMED CHOICE. YOU WILL FIND THE OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE NOW SUPPORTS THESE CONCEPTS.
